UAE Introduces New Visit Visa Categories and Residency Permits: What Expats and Businesses Need to Know

The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global hub for talent, tourism, and innovation. In a recent announcement, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) introduced new visit visa categories and residency permits aimed at attracting specialists, supporting the tourism sector, and providing humanitarian support to individuals in need.

For expats, entrepreneurs, and businesses, these updates are more than policy changes—they are opportunities to access new markets, expand networks, and create long-term plans in the UAE.

New Visit Visa Categories

The UAE has unveiled four new categories of visit visas, each designed to cater to specific industries and visitor needs.

1. AI Specialists Visa

Artificial Intelligence remains a key focus in the UAE’s long-term vision. This visa targets professionals in AI and related technologies.

  • Available as single or multiple-entry.

  • Applicants must provide a supporting letter from a hosting or sponsoring entity in the technology field.

  • Aimed at attracting top global talent in AI research, development, and application.

2. Entertainment Visa

This visa supports the UAE’s growing entertainment industry.

  • Granted to foreigners entering the country for temporary entertainment purposes.

  • Helps facilitate global collaborations in media, film, music, and other entertainment sectors.

3. Events Visa

Designed for the UAE’s dynamic calendar of cultural, educational, and business events.

  • Issued for festivals, exhibitions, conferences, seminars, and similar activities.

  • Requires a sponsor from the public or private sector, along with event details.

  • Strengthens Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s role as leading event destinations worldwide.

4. Tourism Visa (Cruise Ships & Yachts)

The UAE remains a popular stop for global tourism, particularly cruise and yacht travel.

  • A multiple-entry visa for tourists arriving via cruise ships or leisure boats.

  • Sponsorship must come from a licensed tourism facility.

  • Encourages longer stays and repeat visits to the UAE.

Humanitarian Residence Permit

One of the most impactful reforms is the introduction of the humanitarian residence permit.

  • Valid for one year, renewable under ICP’s decision.

  • Granted to individuals from countries affected by war, unrest, or disasters.

  • No guarantor or host required.

  • Flexibility in financial solvency and kinship requirements to accommodate genuine humanitarian cases.

This permit highlights the UAE’s humanitarian approach and support for global communities facing hardship.

Residency for Widows and Divorcees

The UAE has also introduced a renewable one-year residence permit for widows and divorcees, with conditions based on the husband’s nationality.

  • If the husband was Emirati: The widow/divorcee can apply within six months of death or divorce.

  • If the husband was a foreigner: The widow/divorcee with child custody may apply within six months, provided she was a resident in the UAE at the time.

  • Financial solvency and adequate housing are required.

This step ensures stability for women and families during transitional times.

Sponsorship Rules for Relatives and Friends

The UAE has introduced minimum income requirements for residents who wish to sponsor relatives and friends:

  • Immediate family → Minimum monthly income of AED 4,000

  • Second/third-degree relatives → AED 8,000

  • Friends → AED 15,000

These updated rules ensure that sponsors have the financial means to support dependents responsibly.

Business Exploration Visa

For entrepreneurs and professionals exploring opportunities, the Business Exploration Visa now has clearer conditions:

  • Applicants must show financial solvency aligned with their intended business activity.

  • Alternatively, they must demonstrate that they already operate in the same field outside the UAE.

This visa is a significant enabler for startups and investors considering the UAE as their next business destination.

Truck Drivers’ Visa Updates

The transport sector also benefits from updates.

  • Truck drivers can now obtain single or multiple-entry visas.

  • Sponsorship must come from a freight or goods transportation company.

  • Health insurance and financial guarantees are mandatory.

This update supports logistics and trade—sectors crucial to the UAE’s economy.

What These Changes Mean for Expats and Businesses

The latest reforms reflect the UAE’s strategy of combining economic growth with inclusivity:

  • AI and tech professionals gain easier access to opportunities.

  • Tourism, entertainment, and events industries benefit from specialized visas.

  • Humanitarian and family-related provisions ensure stronger community support.

  • Businesses and investors get clearer pathways to explore, establish, and expand in the UAE.

Conclusion

With these new visa categories and residency permits, the UAE is reinforcing its commitment to being a global hub for innovation, culture, and opportunity. Whether you’re a professional, entrepreneur, or family member looking to stay connected, these changes open new doors for residency and collaboration.
